TVD “Let The Right One In” re-cap

This week, we see that a stormy night in Mystic Falls is a bad omen and nothing good comes of it. Elena sleeping in bed gets startled awake by a window slamming open from the storm. It makes her really nervous and it should because it’s a sign of things to come.

In Jeremy’s room, Anna is there and wouldn’t you know, she loves storms.

Anna: I love storms.
Jeremy: Is that a vampire thing? ‘Cause I read vampires don’t like running water.
Anna: That’s only Dracula. Yeah, he was a complete wuss. Never showered, really smelly.
Jeremy: Seriously?
Anna: (laughs) First rule about vampires: don’t believe anything you read.

The conversation continues with Jeremy having a not-so-bright moment asking:

Jeremy: Does your mom know you’re a…?
Anna: The fact that you would even think it’s possible to keep something like that a secret from your own family is just further proof that you’re not ready.
Jeremy: ‘Not ready’ is a step up from ‘no’.
Anna: And a million steps down from ‘maybe’.

Elena goes into Jeremy’s room to tell him that a storm is coming so make sure you close the window. Jeremy turns to look at the window which is presumably how Anna disappeared before Elena came in.

Jump over to the vampire hostel (formerly known as Miss Gibbons’ house) where a brooding Frederick is making a stake. He’s all butt-hurt over Beth-Anne being killed but Pearl reminds him it was their own fault for leaving in the first place. Pearl tells Frederick once again to back off and have patience but his expression says that won’t be happening any time soon. The second Pearl is gone (she went into town to asses how much vervain has been distributed in the town and who’s in charge of the anti-vamp movement these days) a group of vampires enters the room. Turns out that they were listening in on the conversation and Frederick uses Pearls patience speech against her. There is a mutiny going on in the vamp hostel and Frederick wants revenge on the Salvatore’s bad. Seeing how Stefan was the one who actually killed Beth-Anne you can bet he is number one on the target list.

Frederick: Pearl says we’re not here for revenge. I say: that’s exactly what we’re here for!

At the boardinghouse, Elena learns from Damon and Stefan that the tomb vampires are out and living together planning who knows what for Mystic Falls. Damon also mentions his side deal with Pearl.

Damon: (referring to Pearl) She’s gonna help me get Katherine back.
Elena: Of course she is. Damon gets what he wants, as usual, no matter who he hurts in the process.
Damon: You don’t have to be snarky about it.
Elena: I woke up this morning to learn that all the vampires have been released from the tomb. I’ve earned snarky.

Damon who is known to be blunt and straightforward when he feels like it asks Elena:

Damon: How long are you gonna blame me for turning your birth mother into a vampire?

It’s very obvious that Elena is holding that against Damon even though it happened years back and he himself was probably being played by Katherine. What would the chances be that Katherine’s descendent who has a daughter that just happens to look EXACTLY like Katherine would find Damon and want to be turned into a vampire? Elena, it’s time to move on and sweetie – open your eyes the guy doesn’t want to hurt you in the least which is very evident throughout this episode.

Moving on… Damon leaves the room and Stefan and Elena are talking. Elena apologizes for getting all pissy with Damon.

Elena: “I’m sorry. He just makes me so cranky.”
Stefan: “I know… He makes everybody cranky.”
Elena: “So what are we gonna do?”
Stefan: “Damon and I are gonna handle everything. I promise.”
Elena: “Well, what about me? I can’t just sit here and do nothing.”
Stefan: “That’s exactly what you’re gonna do because that’s what’s gonna keep you safe.”
Elena: “Which means nothing if you’re not safe too.”
Stefan: “What do you mean? I’m perfectly safe. I have Damon, the self-serving psychopath on my side.”
Elena: “That’s comforting.”

Foreshadowing anyone? So far we have the ominous storm, a stake wielding Frederick and a promise of “I’m perfectly safe” from Stefan… yeah, things are going to happen and happen very soon.

At the grill, Anna and Jeremy are talking when Anna notices his (vervain) bracelet. Anna asks him where he got it so he tells her it was a gift from his sister. She tries to casually ask if Elena knows that he is hanging out with her which he answers with a ‘no’. Jeremy takes the bracelet off and tries to give it to Anna. Anna hesitates then tells him that it looks better on him. Jeremy takes another opportunity to further his turn me into a vampire campaign but Anna doesn’t budge on her no answer.

Jeremy: Come on, you can’t keep saying no to me.
Anna: Look, I’m not gonna turn someone who learned everything he knows about vampires from Netflix.

Matt and Caroline are also at The Grill and poor Matt tells Caroline that he just wishes his mom would do better. Caroline actually says something good about Kelly even though she has given her nothing but the evil eye and open hatred. Caroline tells Matt that you never know, Kelly can still change so give her the chance. Caroline has to leave because she has to go to some family event for her father. Matt tells her to be careful (you know, that ominous storm and all) and to have her cell phone with her. Yeah, some more foreshadowing so you know something is going to happen with Caroline tonight.

At the boarding house, Damon is adjusting a clock or something when Stefan announces that he has to go out.

Damon: “Hunting party?”
Stefan: “That guy did a number on me last night when he stabbed me. I’ve got to get my strength back up.”
Damon: “I have two liters of soccer mom in the fridge.. no?”
Stefan: “We’ll talk when I get back.”
Damon: “Alright…. Give my regards to the squirrels.”

Stefan leaves and you get nothing but bad vibes. He has a jacket on with the hood up because the rain has picked up heavily. It’s also pretty dark and the camera angles let you know that someone is out there watching Stefan as he starts to jog through the woods. Sure enough, Stefan is attacked and stabbed by Frederick and his mutinous group.

Elena is back home now and her cell phone rings. She looks at it seeing that it’s Damon calling. From the look on her face as she declines to answer this isn’t the first time he’s called her tonight. Right after she declines the phone call, the doorbell rings. She goes to the door and Damon is standing there. He immediately tells her she’s ignoring his calls when the door opens but moves on getting straight to the point.

Damon: Is Stefan here?
Elena: No. Why? Is something wrong?
Damon: He went out in the woods and didn’t come back. I can’t get him on his phone, I figured he was here with you.
Elena: (tries calling him) It’s going straight to voicemail. Where could he be?
Damon: You’re not gonna like what I’m thinking.

After a commercial break, we see Damon at the vamp hostel banging on the door. He is pissed with good reason and demands something along the lines of “Pearl open this door or I’ll rip your head off.” The door opens but it’s Frederick who opens it. Damon demands to know where his brother is and Frederick compels Miss Gibbons to NEVER invite Damon inside. With that done, Frederick has his fellow mutinous vampires bring Stefan in. He isn’t looking so great and to show he means business, Frederick stabs Stefan while Damon watches unable to do anything.

Frederick (to Damon): “One hundred forty-five years left starving in a tomb, thanks to Katherine’s infatuation with you and your brother. First few weeks every single nerve in your body screams with fire. Kinda pain that can drive a person mad. Well, I thought your brother might want to get a taste of that before I killed him… You have a nice day.”

Damon goes back to his car where Elena is waiting. She panics when Damon says that he can’t go into the house to save Stefan because it’s a human home and he needs an invite. Elena tells him that she can go in but Damon refuses to allow her because it’s too dangerous. Elena is determined to do something to save Stefan but there is no way Damon will let her help. Elena continues to panic and try to convince Damon when he grabs her face and tells her while looking all fierce “Elena, I’ll get him.”

Inside the vamp hostel a gloved vampire takes vervain soaked ropes out of a bucket and Stefan gets tied up. Frederick tortures him and we see Harper watching uncomfortably in the background. Harper doesn’t think this is right and tries to help Stefan. Unfortunately, Harper is outnumbered and no one feels the way he does. I told you from the beginning that Harper wasn’t one of the evil kill-all vampires. And now he is going to pay for his act of kindness towards Stefan thanks to Frederick who reminds Harper that “Miss Pearl is no longer in charge.”

Damon and Elena go to the High School looking for Alaric because they both know that in order to get Stefan back they’re going to need help. They approach Alaric who is understandably hesitant with Damon. I mean technically, Damon did kill him. Damon tries to sway Alaric by telling him that the woman in charge of the vampires (Pearl) can help find Isobel (Alaric’s wife). Elena chimes in saying that she would go but… Damon finishes her sentence for her with your life is valuable but yours (towards Alaric) isn’t. Alaric basically says nope, you tried to kill me so Elena and Stefan go to leave but right before they are out the door he agrees to help.

Back at The Grill, Anna and Jeremy are still hanging out and Jeremy is still trying to get Anna to turn him.

Jeremy: So, I have an answer.
Anna: To what?
Jeremy: Why you should turn me.
Anna: We’re back to that?
Jeremy: Look. I wake up every day and I feel okay, but there’s something missing. Like a…like a hole. Some people, they fit. In life or whatever. I, I don’t.
Anna: So, you want a pity turn. I don’t think so.
Jeremy: No, you should turn me because I don’t have anything else.
Anna: Do you even know why we turn other people? It’s not to give someone a one-way ticket out of loner-hood. Okay? One, we need someone to do our dirty work. Two, revenge. Three, boredom, but you know that never turns out well. And then, you know, there’s the obvious one. You love someone so much that you would do anything to spend all of eternity with them. I’m sorry but you don’t fit any of those categories yet.

It’s one of those her mouth says no but her eyes say yes moments because she looks all wistful at the thought of him being with her. Jeremy isn’t going to give up any time soon on the issue. Anna goes to leave when Pearl comes in. Anna goes to get Pearl out of there (remember, Pearl is anti-Gilbert and put a ban on Jeremy) when Mayor Lockwood and Tyler come in. The mayor gets all flirty with Pearl and insists that the weather is too bad to go into while Tyler watches on unhappily. Pearl goes to sit with the mayor to further her ‘take back our town’ agenda while Anna and Jeremy text each other since they can’t be seen talking by Pearl. As the mayor goes to follow Pearl to a table, we get another brief glimpse into the dysfunction of the Lockwood family. (And for a minute, I don’t see Tyler as nothing but a true jerk. I almost want to like him for a moment there.)

(Mayor Lockwood invites Pearl and Anna to join him and Tyler at the Mystic Grill)
Tyler: Be more creepy, Dad. Not like your son is standing right here.
Mayor Lockwood: Grow up. Elections are coming; she’s a constituent. And a rich one from the looks of it.
Tyler: And you can tell all that by looking at her ass?

Back at the school, Alaric is showing off a little invention of his – vervain darts. Damon takes note of the fact that Alaric isn’t just an ordinary teacher.

Damon: “Teacher by day, vampire hunter by night.”
Alaric: “I have you to thank for that.”

Things are a little tense between Damon and Alaric so Elena tries to break the awkwardness by changing the subject… not so sure she mad a good choice on topic though.

Elena: “Stefan told me about your ring.”
Alaric: “What about it?”
Damon: ” Let me recap. You tried to kill me. I defended myself. You died and, according to my brother, your ring brought you back to life. Am I leaving anything out?”
Alaric: “Yeah… The part where I try and kill you again, only this time I don’t miss.”

Elena again is left with an awkward situation so she jumps in saying that she wants to help get Stefan back. Damon doesn’t even look at her and says NO WAY while talking strategy with Alaric. Elena volunteers to help again saying she can’t just sit home and do nothing and that Damon wouldn’t understand. Damon disagrees saying:

Damon: I get it. He’s the reason you live. His love lifts you up where you belong.

Damon goes on to say that she can be their getaway driver or something then goes back to strategy talk. Elena is persistent and wants to help so she tries again but this time Damon doesn’t just say a simple no. He turns to her with a fierce look in his eyes and says “I can’t protect you Elena. It takes *snaps fingers* that long to rip your head off. You can’t go in.” Elena is taken aback by Damon’s openness and the fact that it’s the truth, she wouldn’t be much help going in and dying. Alaric is watching this exchange between Damon and Elena intently. It’s obvious that ‘cold and merciless Damon’ is capable of caring and cares about what happens to Elena. Oh yeah, that Damon and Elena bond is growing and everyone in their lives are starting to see that.

At The Grill, Matt is still working and takes a minute to talk to Caroline on her cell phone. The storm washed out the Interstate so Caroline took a detour through the woods. She ended up very lost and takes Matt’s advice about just going home. All of a sudden, her car gets stuck in the mud and she looses her cell signal.

At the vamp hostel, Alaric knocks on the door playing the role of a stranded motorist. He asks Frederick if there is a phone that he could use because his car broke down. Frederick has a vampire guide Alaric to Miss Gibbons in the kitchen to ask about using the phone. Miss Gibbons is all cheery preparing food and points Alaric to the phone. Alaric catches the vampire (Billy) who guided him to the kitchen off guard and kills him. Alaric guides Miss Gibbons to the back door and asks her to invite Damon in. She looks at Damon and says “Oh no, I can’t”. Damon is impatient and tells Alaric to get her out the door. Once she is outside, Damon asks her if she has any family inside or if there is any other human in the house. When she answers no Damon promptly snaps her neck so he can get inside the house. Alaric is upset by what Damon did because Damon said he wouldn’t kill any humans.

Alaric: She’s human.
Damon: And I’m not. So I don’t care.

Damon reminds him that there was no other way he could enter the house since she was compelled not to invite him. In Damon’s eyes, she’s dead so he no longer needs an invitation – case closed and problem solved.

Out at the car we see the get away driver Elena sitting in the driver’s seat impatiently waiting for everyone to get out. She’s getting all twitchy and then pulls out one of Alaric’s vampire tranquilizer darts. You know where this is going…

At the Grill Pearl and Mayor Lockwood are still talking when Pearl notices Anna and a boy looking at each other all smiley and flirty. Pearl asks who the boy is and the mayor says it’s Jeremy Gilbert. Needless to say, she isn’t happy with that revelation. Elsewhere in The Grill, Matt and Tyler are talking. Tyler is watching his father and says:

Tyler: The guy’s not even subtle about it.
Matt: Who is that?
Tyler: It’s not my mother.

Again, I feel for Tyler because you are bound to be screwed up having to grow up with a sleaze of a father who being married tries to pick up women in front of his son and the rest of the world without even attempting to hide it.

At the vamp hostel, Billy the now dead vampire (thanks to Alaric) hasn’t returned to the others and Frederick has noticed. “Hey Billy, what’s the holdup?” Damon is now in the house and encounters another vampire (Jacob) who he quickly kills. Alaric runs to the car to get his bag of vampire killing tools and surprise… Elena isn’t there where she is supposed to be. We get a “damit Elena” from Alaric before he rushes back to the house with his bag.

Inside the house, Frederick realizes something isn’t right when both Billy and Jacob don’t return or answer him. He goes off to see what’s up while warning the others to be alert.

Elena who has wandered off on her own breaks into the vamp hostel’s basement where there is of course a guard. She makes a little too much noise getting in and catches the guards attention. She tries to hide behind the wall hoping she won’t be found but the guard starts to go towards her. Right when you think she is royally screwed, a shadowed figure comes up behind the guard and snaps his neck. Who else could the shadowed savor be besides Damon? Elena is relieved but Damon not so much because she isn’t supposed to be in there at all. He is frustrated and has one question for Elena – “ARE YOU INSANE?!”

Caroline who is still stranded in the storm is sitting in her car trying to get a signal on her cell. The rain dies down a little so she decides to grab an umbrella and get out of the car. As Caroline is wandering around holding her phone in the air she slips and slides down a small hill. She tries to climb up grabbing onto anything she can to help her. She grabs what looks like vines or roots but it turns out to be a body. Caroline freaks out and starts screaming.

At The Grill, Anna is in the restroom and Pearl comes in. Pearl thinks it’s a good time to confront Anna about Jeremy.

Pearl: Jeremy Gilbert? Is that what you’ve been up to?
Anna: He’s my friend. What’s the big deal?
Pearl: His family is the reason I was stuck in a tomb for over a century.
Anna: That doesn’t mean he’ll make the same choices.
Pearl: I want you to stop seeing him.
Anna: I’ve been on my own for a long time, Mother. I can make my own decisions.
Pearl: Then stop acting like a child. As soon as Jeremy finds out what you really are, he will turn on you.
Anna: He already knows.
Pearl: What did you just say?
Anna: Jeremy knows. He likes it, and he likes me.

Pearl slaps Anna after that last line and walks out hella pissed. Anna passes quietly by Jeremy when she leaves and he gets a text saying “I’ll do it.” Anna has obviously had enough with her mothers interference and is going to take matters into her own hands by turning Jeremy. Whether that is a good idea or not is another subject.

In the basement of the vamp hostel, Stefan is tied up and hanging from the ceiling. He thanks Harper for trying to help him. Harper is now tied to a chair with stakes in his legs holding him down. Damon and Elena then enter and Stefan immediately says that Elena shouldn’t be in there. Damon replies that she is supposed to be in the car. They get Stefan down and try to get him out but Stefan won’t go without helping Harper. He pulls out the stakes and they thank each other. Damon is getting antsy and tells Stefan to hurry up. He then asks Elena if she can get Stefan to the car. She says she can so off they go to the car.

Frederick is on his search for Billy and Jacob when he finds one of them staked. Damon then appears and goes for Frederick but the other vampires attack him. Frederick gets out while Damon is fighting the vampires. One of the vampires almost gets the upper hand on Damon but Alaric saves him by killing the vampire with a crossbow. Damon rushes off to try to catch Frederick.

Outside, Elena is trying to help Stefan to the car by supporting his weight when they stumble. Elena cuts her hand in the fall but gets up quickly rushing with Stefan to the car. The get in the car and Elena goes to start the engine. She discovers that the ignition has been broken out and turns to Stefan to let him know something is very wrong. Before she gets the chance to finish her sentence, Frederick smashes a window and drags Stefan out.

Frederick: This is for Beth-Anne (stabs Stefan with stake) … and this is for the tomb. (Stefan gets near fatally staked.)

Elena rushes over there screaming NO! and stabs Frederick with the vervain dart she had. With Frederick down, she rushes over to Stefan who looks very much like he is dying.

Alaric is still in the vamp hostel where he stabs the last vampire inside with one of his vervain tranquilizer darts. Damon comes back into the room and says that Frederick is gone and that they need to get out of there. They open the front door to leave where they see out in the front yard a large group of scattered vampires waiting for them.

Damon: How many vervain darts do you have left?
Alaric: One.
Damon: Not enough… (They go back into the house.)

Matt is done working for the night and goes home to find his mom cooking. Matt is unsure about the food but very happy that she is trying. Kelly admits that the food probably isn’t that great and that maybe Matt should just order a pizza but he assures her that this is fine. As they are having a little moment of bonding, the doorbell rings. Matt goes to answer it and finds Caroline there. He is smiling at her ready to start cracking jokes about her getting stuck and “what did you do now” but Caroline looks very serious and sad. Before Matt can say anything, Sheriff Forbes steps behind Caroline and asks Matt if his mother is home.

We jump over to The Grill where Mayor Lockwood is on his cell phone telling someone on the other end “wait for me, keep it out of the media”. Tyler asks what happened and his dad tells him that they’ve found Vickie’s body. As the camera pans out, we see that Jeremy was listening.

Back over to the woods near the vampire hostel, Stefan still looks like Hell and Frederick is still lying motionless on the ground. Elena doesn’t know what to do but then realizes the cut on her hand is still bleeding. She puts the little bit of blood in Stefan’s mouth. Stefan says no to the blood but Elena knows that without it he won’t heal. Time is running out (Frederick is only tranquilized) and Elena tells Stefan to take blood from her wrist. Stefan repeatedly tells Elena to run but she refuses. Stefan caves and feeds hungrily from her wrist.

Inside the vamp hostel, Damon and Alaric are gearing up for a fight with the vampires who are outside trying to break the door down. All of a sudden, they hear Pearl.

Pearl: STOP, what’s going on here?
(The door opens and Pearl and Damon stare at each other.)
Pearl (inside the house): “What did you do?”
Damon: “Me? Your merry little band of vampires spent the day torturing my brother.”
Pearl: “Trust me. The parties responsible for this will be dealt with.”
Damon: “Our little arrangement doesn’t work unless you learn to control them.”
Pearl: “This wasn’t supposed to happen.”
Damon: “Well, it did. If I had a good side… not a way to get on it.”

Alaric is watching them talk with a WTF? look on his face.

Outside, Stefan has fed and Frederick is up and moving. Frederick goes after Stefan but, Stefan having just had human blood is stronger and has the advantage. Stefan looks extra feral viciously attacking Fredrick and Elena has to repeatedly tell him to stop before he registers her presence. Stefan turns to look at her with a wild expression on his vainy black-eyed face.

The fighting is done and Stefan is home safe at the boardinghouse. Elena is staring off into space looking like her mind is miles away. Stefan comes into the room and Elena asks him how he’s doing and he says that he’s fine.

Stefan: “What you did today, coming to help me, you could have been killed.”
Elena: “I know.”
Stefan: “And what I did… I’m sorry… I’m sorry that you had to see it.”
Elena: “I’ve just never — You were like this other person. And it’s my fault. I made you.”
Stefan: “What? No, no, no, no. You didn’t make me do anything. You were saving my life. And I was saving yours. Everything’s gonna be okay.”

They are both looking kind of sad but before more can be said, Elena’s cell phone rings.

Elena: Hey Jer… what’s going on? (Elena looks worried) Oh no..

At Matt’s house, Tyler and Jeremy are sitting down looking shocked and sad while Kelly is crying. Matt is in his room with Caroline trying to comfort him. Caroline asks if there is anything that he needs but he just wants to be alone right now. The doorbell rings and it’s Elena. Elena is hesitant and like everyone, looks sad. Matt goes straight to her and they hug.

At The Grill, Damon and Alaric are having a drink and Damon tries to talk to Alaric.

Damon (to Alaric): “That was fun. Oh, don’t look at me like that. I know you hate me. Guess what? Everyone hates me. But you can’t deny we were bad ass.”

Alaric isn’t interested in male bonding with Damon at the moment and punches him. Damon responds in true Damon fashion by shrugging it off and having a drink.

At the Gilbert house, the night is coming to an end as Jeremy and Elena arrive home. Elena asks if Jeremy is ok and he says that he just wants to get some sleep. Jeremy goes upstairs and starts tearing papers apart. Anna appears and asks him what he’s doing. Jeremy tells Anna about Vickie’s body being found. Anna realizes that Jeremy wanted to become a vampire because he wanted to find Vickie. Jeremy starts to say that isn’t the only reason but Anna does her vampire disappearing act.

At the boardinghouse, Damon arrives to find his IV blood bags completely emptied. Damon then discovers Stefan crouched in a corner with a bloody mouth. Stefan looks back at Damon horrified. It looks like Stefan isn’t doing as good as he led Elena to believe. Someone can’t handle human blood…
